Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku
石巻工房 by Karimoku は、石巻工房とカリモクそれぞれの強みに根ざし、素材を重視したアプローチで多用途に使える製品をつくる家具コレクションである。2011年の東日本大震災で大きな被害を受けた宮城県・石巻市で生まれた「石巻工房」。そのプロダクトは、被災後に「手元にある材料で何とかする」というDIY的な要素と、その制約の中で生み出されたデザインが特徴である。
石巻工房 by Karimokuでは、日本を代表する木工家具メーカーであるカリモクが、石巻工房が持つデザインの特徴を活かしつつ、半世紀以上の木製家具づくりを通じて培ってきた木材の魅力を最大限に引き出すノウハウを活かして家具としてのディテールを追求することで、石巻工房の新たな魅力を引き出すことを目指している。 石巻工房 by Karimoku には、地産地消を世界に広げ、サスティナブルであろうとする、現在の石巻工房の姿勢へのリスペクトが込められており、石巻工房ブランドの従来のデザインイメージを再考している。
カリモクの工場で生産時に発生する端材や、商業的ニーズが限定的な木材など、通常は家具用材として適格ではないとされている木材も、積極的に活用していくことを目的としている。このコラボレーションでは、その先にある林業の経済的好循環の促進や人と森林の理想的な共生関係の再構築を通して、持続可能で豊かな社会を実現することを目指している。
Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku is a furniture collection rooted in the strengths of Ishinomaki Laboratory and Karimoku, with a materials-focused approach to creating versatile products. Ishinomaki Laboratory was born in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, a city that was severely damaged by the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku products are characterised by their DIY approach of 'making do with the materials at hand' in the aftermath of the disaster and are designs created within these constraints.
Through this collaboration, Japan's leading wooden furniture manufacturer Karimoku aims to create a new appeal for Ishinomaki Laboratory products while leveraging its existing design features. By utilising the knowledge gained through more than half a century of wooden furniture production, they aspire to maximise the attractiveness of wood and pursue details in furniture design. Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku aims to expand local production for local consumption worldwide and push sustainable design. It is a tribute to the current attitude of Ishinomaki Laboratory and is rethinking the current design image of the Ishinomaki Laboratory brand.
In addition, the Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku brand aims to actively utilise wood that would not ordinarily qualify for furniture making, such as scrap wood from production at Karimoku factories and wood with limited commercial use. They aspire to achieve a sustainable and prosperous society and re-establish a symbiotic relationship between people and forests by promoting an economic, virtuous circle in the forestry industry.
