Located in Tokyo’s Shintomicho district, this project transforms an existing hostel into a boutique hotel composed of a single suite on each floor. Situated within walking distance of Ginza and Tokyo Station, the hotel was conceived as a place where visitors can experience the city as an extension of everyday life.
The original hostel layout, previously divided into multiple guest rooms, was reorganized into a self-contained suite designed for a single group of guests. Composed of a generous living area and two bedrooms, each suite accommodates families and groups traveling together. The inclusion of a convertible sofa, kitchen, laundry facilities, and double-sink vanity further supports extended stays.
The ground and second floors are occupied by dotcom coffee, a cafe open not only to hotel guests but also to local residents and visitors. Rather than treating the hotel and cafe as separate programs, the project approaches them as a continuous experience. From the ground-floor counter, which functions as both hotel reception and cafe bar, to the selection of materials, tiles, and architectural details, the spaces are united by a shared design language.
The project also included the development of a comprehensive brand identity in collaboration with the design studio 6D. The brand’s distinctive reddish-brown color is integrated throughout the environment, appearing in signage, amenities, and various custom elements. Graphics and wayfinding were designed as an extension of the architecture, creating a consistent experience that accompanies guests throughout their stay.
Furniture was selected primarily from products previously designed by Keiji Ashizawa Design, reinforcing a close relationship between architecture and furnishings. In collaboration with each manufacturer, several pieces were customized to suit the scale and requirements of the hotel. The interiors are furnished with oak pieces by Karimoku Case, ARIAKE, and Ishinomaki Laboratory, establishing a calm and understated atmosphere. Each suite is also equipped with high-fidelity speakers by Dynaudio, introducing an additional sensory layer to the guest experience.
Bringing together architecture, interiors, branding, and hospitality, the project explores how a hotel can function as an extension of everyday urban life. Rather than existing as an isolated destination, it seeks to establish a place that is connected to its neighborhood while offering visitors a sense of belonging within the city.
